What IS a doula?A Doula is a trained professional who offers emotional, educational, and physical support to a laboring mother and her partner. We provide unbiased, evidence-based information and resources to help you make informed, empowered decisions about your birth experience.
-
What's the difference between a doula and a midwife?Doulas and midwives have very different roles, but they do compliment each other. A midwife is a trained medical professional who monitors you and your baby's health and safety during labor, as well as "catches" your baby as they're born. A doula does not provide any medical services or advice, but rather is there to support you emotionally and physically using various comfort techniques.
-
Why do I need a doula if I already have a midwife?Doulas are able to provide physical and emotional support much earlier in the labor process since midwives do not generally arrive until labor is well underway. A doula also provides continuous support, whereas a midwife is not always able to be there 100% of the time during your labor.

If I have a doula, then what will my partner do?A doula does not replace your partner in the birth space. I will compliment and support your partner's role in your birth - because he knows you better than anyone! Often, dads want to help with labor support but don't really know how. I help guide your partner and give him tools to be as supportive as he wants to be during your labor experience. I am also there to help support your partner - because he, too, is navigating new and uncharted waters (even if you've done this before - because every birth is unique!)
-
What if I want an epidural? It is a common misconception that doulas are only for "natural" labor. That couldn't be further from the truth! Every birth comes with it's own challenges (just like parenting!) and having the support of a doula will help you feel heard, validated, and supported - no matter how your birth unfolds. Doulas can help with comfort measures leading up to and during epidural placement, as well as help with position suggestions/changes to keep your labor progressing smoothly with an epidural.

What if I want to be induced or have a planned c-section?Did you know that you still have several options when it comes to inductions and C-sections? Without the support and knowledge a doula provides, many families simply aren't aware of the choices they have during their birth. I will help you come up with a plan that fits you and your goals, as well as support you through it so you feel heard, validated, and empowered in your birth experience, no matter how it unfolds.
